Wonders of the world
In the ancient world seven works of men were considered to be very impressive. They were called the “Wonders of the World.” They were impressive because of their beauty, their immense size and the many thousands of people needed to build them. The pyramids in Egypt are the oldest wonder and the only one which is still standing. It took 526 years to build all the pyramids. The Great Pyramid of Giza was built by King Khufu for his comb. He used hundreds of thousands of slaves to build this pyramid. It was built from 2,300,000 blocks of stone. Each of these blocks weighed at least two tons. The Colossus of Rhodes, another wonder, was a giant statue of a man. It stood at the entrance to the port of Rhodes, a Greek island. It was over thirty meters high and it took eight years to build. The Colossus was destroyed by an earthquake in 224 B.C.E. The word “colossal” (which means “huge”) comes from the Colossus of Rhodes There are many buildings and statues which are considered to be modern wonders. Most people agree that the Taj Mahal in India is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. The Taj Mahal was built as a memorial to the Shah Jihan’s wife, who died when she was young. Twenty thousand workers from all over India worked on the Taj Mahal every day for twenty-two years. It was completed 1654. Modern and ancient wonders of the wonders of the world are examples of the beauty man can create with unlimited energy, money and power. Vüsal Süleymanov BAKI 2008
